Importance of Pre-Employment Medical Test
In this competitive corporate world most organisations demand a healthy and fit employee because a healthy employee can be more productive compared to an unhealthy one.
It is observed that a healthy workforce stays more motivated and connected to the organisation. An unhealthy workforce can pull down your productivity level, due to their increasing work day offs (sick leaves), as the pressure will pile up on other employees. This will result in less efficiency amongst healthy employees.
Healthy employees on the other hand create a more positive and energetic work environment which can boost the efficiency level. Therefore, it is important that the employer performs pre-employment health check-up before hiring any employee, so that they can hire the right person in the organisation who can demonstrate better corporate responsibility.
Pre-employment Medical Test
Pre- employment medical check-up may include health and mental assessment. It includes drugs (cocaine, marijuana, nicotine, amphetamines, and methamphetamines) tests, alcohol tests and psychological tests. The employee may also be asked to produce past medical reports.
The organisation and management can decide to add few more pre-employment medical examination checklist to know the fitness and soundness of an employee. The tests may vary depending upon the nature of the job. Following are the tests which are generally recommended by an employer:
- Haemoglobin test: This test is essential to determine the energy level of an employee. Low haemoglobin can cause extreme fatigue, dizziness, shortness of breath which can lead to constant inefficiency in work performance.
- Blood sugar test: Low blood sugar level or too high blood sugar level can be a serious issue, which can give rise to a lot of problems such as difficulty in concentrating, lack of energy, blurred vision, headaches and muscle pain etc. Therefore, this test determines whether the blood sugar level is normal or not.
- Peak expiratory flow rate (PEFR test): This test measures how fast a person can exhale. A person with abnormal PEFR may experience difficulty in breathing which can give rise to severe anxiety or panic, decreased alertness, confusion which can hamper a person’s productivity.
- Pregnancy diagnostic test (all the female candidates): This test is performed to check whether the employee is pregnant or not. This test is done to know the continuity period after being hired, in general an employer expects at least one year of continuity without interruptions.
- Liver function test: Liver disorder can cause severe abdominal pain, high blood pressure and fatigue. This can occur if a person consumes alcohol heavily or is exposed to chemical which can restrain productivity. Liver function test is therefore considered a very important test before hiring an individual on board.
- Spirometry test: There are certain jobs where workers are exposed to various harmful substances. In such jobs, one has to ensure that workers do not have respiratory problem. For instance, in an iron and steel manufacturing environment, workers are often exposed to harmful chemicals and gas. In this case, the employer needs to carry out a spirometry test to check if the employee has a lung or respiratory problem that may deteriorate due to such work environment.
- Audiometry test: This test is also job specific. It basically eliminates workers who are at risk of hearing loss due to the exposure of high noise level. If the workers are exposed to more than 90dB then this test is a must. This test is crucial as it reveals whether the worker can sustain a high degree of noise level without the risk of having hearing impairment in the future.
- Renal function test: It is basically a kidney function test used to evaluate how well the kidneys are working. Kidney disorder can lead to swelling of legs, hands, feet, ankles or face, loss of appetite, fatigue, confusion, and shortness of breath which can result in disruption of work.
- Electrocardiogram (ECG): This test measures the electrical activity of the heart to conclude whether it is working smoothly or not. It is essential to detect a heart problem which may arise in many situation in work environment and can subdue the productivity level.
- HBsAg test: A positive HBsAg test means that an employee is infected with hepatitis B virus. It may cause employees to become very sick for several weeks. It can lead to scarring of organ, liver, cancer and even death which can affect the employee’s performance level.
- Complete blood count test: This test evaluates the overall health of an employee to detect a wide range of disorders, infections and anaemia which can again constricts ones productivity level and efficiency.
- Urine test: Urine drug test is an utmost important test as it screens for drugs including cocaine, nicotine, marijuana etc. The employers prefer this test to eliminate candidates who have drugs related problems, as their addictive nature can create problems and nuisance in the work environment which can lead to unnecessary hassles in a healthy workplace.
Since high productivity is expected from every employee, therefore pre medical health check-up has become indispensable in every organisation.
Pre-employment medical health check-up presents a realistic picture to the employer about the health issues of an employee to assess the efficiency and productivity level the employee can bring out to the organisation. It helps to protect the employee if there is any risk associated with the occupational exposure. Pre-employment medical test should not be considered that it is solely for the interest of the employer but it also helps the employee to know the occupational hazards he might face.
